Best Time to Visit the Great Wall

Spring: April and May

Clear skies, temperatures 15–22°C, no rain. The wall is walkable without overheating. Spring flowers bloom in Beijing; the wall is at its greenest. The cherry blossoms in the city (if you care) peak late April. Early May is the May Day holiday — a Chinese public holiday — so book tours a week ahead. Late May and early June are the sweet spot: warm enough to swim at Mutianyu (there is a small pool), not yet the domestic summer tourism crush. This is when I tell my friends to come.

Summer: July and August

Hot (30°C and above), humid, and the rainy season. The toboggan at Mutianyu closes on rainy days (you use the chairlift down instead). The wall itself is fine to walk, but the crowds swell and many domestic tours book large groups. Book ahead if you must come in summer. An early departure (the $18 lunch tour at 8:00) gets you on the wall before the 10:00 a.m. crowd wave. The rainy season means potential afternoon thunderstorms; mornings are more reliable.

Autumn: September to early November

Clear again, temperatures 15–25°C, autumn colour starts to show in late September. September is warm and calm; October is cooler but still walkable. Late October to early November is prime — fewer tourists, clear skies, the wall turns gold and red with leaves. But be warned: Chinese national holidays run 1–7 October (Golden Week). During those seven days, everywhere in China is packed with domestic tourists. Avoid Golden Week if possible; the crowds are biblical and prices spike. Before or after Golden Week, autumn is perfect.

Winter: December to March

Cold (0–10°C most days) and windy. The wall is at its emptiest. If it snows, the wall is dramatic and almost deserted. Reviewers who go in January or February often call it the best experience because they have the wall to themselves. The downside: the wind is bitter, water bottles freeze, and you need serious winter gear (thermal layers, gloves, windproof jacket). Snow days are worth the cold; rainy days are miserable. Dress in layers; you warm up walking but the top of the wall is windier than the valley.

The 10:00 crowd wave and how to beat it

Mutianyu sees a predictable rush: big domestic tour groups depart Beijing hotels at 8:00–9:00 a.m., arriving at Mutianyu around 10:00–10:30 a.m. The parking lots fill, the cable car queues swell, and the wall is crowded for 2–3 hours. An 8:00 a.m. early departure ($18 lunch tour) gets you to the wall by 9:30 a.m., ahead of the wave. A VIP 7:00 a.m. slot ($111.20) puts you on the wall before dawn and nearly empty. Or a 7:30 a.m. Jinshanling tour ($46.11) to a quieter section entirely. Afternoon departures (if available) after 2:00 p.m. also avoid the peak but give you less daylight on the wall.

Visa bonus: 2026 is an easy year

Citizens of more than 40 countries — including the UK, most of the EU, Australia, Japan, Canada — can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days, a policy running through 31 December 2026. This is the easiest year in a decade to visit the wall. US citizens are not on the 30-day list but can use the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit rule when continuing to a third country.
